Parent Question

What should I do if my child's IHSS hours get reduced?

Published: Feb. 5, 2025

If your child's IHSS hours suddenly get reduced, read the Notice of Action (NOA) you received carefully. It should note the reason for the reduction, such as your child no longer qualifying for protective supervision. If you believe this reduction was in error, your first step should be to file an appeal. Check the box requesting aid pending appeal so that your child can continue to receive their assigned hours while you go through the appeal process. Even if you think the reduction is a simple error that can be fixed quickly by submitting a document to your IHSS case worker, "You don’t want to do anything less formal without also filing an appeal," says Public Benefits Specialist Lisa Concoff Kronbeck.
