What should I do if the school keeps asking me to pick up my child early?

Published: Feb. 17, 2026Updated: Feb. 23, 2026

Generally speaking, illness is the only reason a school can send a child home. Anytime a school calls a parent to pick up the child and the child is not sick, then that's a suspension. You could ask the school to prepare a suspension notice, and keep track of exactly what time you were called to pick up the child each day. When it equals a total of 10 days, that's considered a placement change, so the school needs to have a manifestation determination meeting. You can learn more about that in our article here.

If the school is sending your child home due to behavior, you can ask for a functional behavioral assessment (FBA). This helps the school put together a plan for managing the behavior.
