Parent Question

What support is available for me as a parent if I have a disability?

Published: Oct. 31, 2025Updated: Oct. 31, 2025

If you're the parent of a child with a developmental disability and you have a disability yourself, some of the programs that help your child may also be available to support you. For example, Regional Center is a good starting point. If you can prove that your disability started before age 18, you may be eligible for services as a client. If you have a school history showing deficits or copies of any old assessments, these documents may be helpful.

If you have low household income, you may also be eligible for benefits programs such as Medi-Cal and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), but note that it is easier for children to qualify than for adults.

The Department of Rehabilitation can help with job coaching, employment support, and educational support in some cases.
