Parent Question

Who diagnoses and works with kids who have vision processing issues?

Published: Jan. 23, 2026Updated: Jan. 23, 2026

Kids who are suspected of having vision processing disorders should have an assessment by a developmental optometrist who is a Fellow of the College of Vision Development (FCOVD). Vision processing issues happen when the brain struggles to organize information received by the eyes. Start by requesting an evaluation from the school. Schools sometimes have difficult with this assessment. If they are not sure what you are asking about, you might suggest they ask the SELPA. If you can get the evaluation through insurance, that is an option. You can provide the report to the school and request an IEP to discuss.

Vision processing problems in otherwise healthy eyes may be related to cortical vision impairment. For more information, see our article on CVI.
