Will Regional Center pay for a GPS tracker for my child?
Public Benefits Specialist Lisa Concoff Kronbeck says that if you're looking for funding for a GPS tracker for your child, getting it through the Self-Determination Program might be easier than through traditional Regional Center funding. It's rarely in Regional Center purchase of service standards, so you might need to talk about it with your service coordinator and get it as an exception.
Even if a GPS tracker is not in the service standards, you can still ask for it. Make sure the need for such a device is reflected in your child's IPP. Regional Center won't fund it if there is no concern about eloping or wandering in the IPP. If there’s a goal about it in your child's IPP, there’s a better chance to get the service. Depending on your Regional Center, you may be asked to prove that private insurance and Medi-Cal denied paying for it first.
