Can I add an AI tool to my child's IEP?
AI tools can potentially help a student access the classroom materials, improve inclusion, assist with executive functioning, and more. You may wonder as a parent how you can add AI tools to your child's IEP.
When you're preparing for an IEP meeting, let the school staff know ahead of time that AI is something you would like to discuss. School staff might not know much about AI tools yet, so it may be up to you to advocate for what you want for your child.
Some states consider AI as assistive technology (AT), so you could request an AT assessment. It would then follow the same process as adding any assistive technology device to the IEP as an accommodation. If AI falls under AT, schools would also be required to pay for the program.
In other cases, AI might be seen as a modification rather than an accommodation. For the most part, indicating somewhere on the IEP how AI will be used will be helpful.
