Parent Question

Can the Self-Determination Program (SDP) pay for services that private insurance won't cover?

Published: Jun. 5, 2025Updated: Oct. 16, 2025

The Self-Determination Program can help fund your child's unmet needs, such as services that your private insurance won't cover. You'll need to get denial letters from your insurance and then make a specific case for why that service is needed for your child. Be careful that the insurance denial letter doesn't say your child doesn't need it because then Regional Center will likely also deny.

Note that Regional Center will often only pay for evidence-based services, so be prepared to make your case for a specific therapy, adaptive clothes/shoes, or whatever it is you are seeking to cover.
