How do I claim Medi-Cal back pay or retroactive reimbursement?
The process for claiming Medi-Cal back pay depends on what kind of back pay you’re talking about. For IHSS back pay, your county should send retroactive timesheets, or they should be visible in the e-timesheet portal when you go to the drop-down menu for the applicable pay period. See our article about IHSS timesheets for more details.
For reimbursement, generally Medi-Cal does not do superbills and reimbursements in the traditional sense. However, in limited circumstances, Medi-Cal will reimburse you if you paid out-of-pocket expenses to a Medi-Cal provider during a time when you were covered by Medi-Cal and your provider would not reimburse you upon being presented with your Medi-Cal card.
Most frequently, this comes up with new Medi-Cal recipients who paid for covered expenses out of pocket before receiving their Medi-Cal card. When this happens, you can request that the provider bill Medi-Cal and issue a refund to you. If the provider refuses to refund you, then you can contact the Medi-Cal Conlan reimbursement line at (916) 403-2007 for an application packet or print out the packet yourself and submit by mail per the instructions on the application.
