Parent Question

Should I wait until the new school year to request assessments?

Published: Apr. 23, 2025Updated: Jun. 6, 2025

When you request an educational assessment for your child, the school has 60 days to perform the assessment. Because of this timeline, you may wonder if it is worth requesting assessments near the end of the school year, or if it is better to wait until the new school year.

It is unlikely that any changes to the IEP as a result of the assessment will be implemented before the end of the school year. However, if you request an assessment soon, the school might get the assessment done before the end of the school year. Then, the report can be presented to next year's teacher at the start of the new year, so your child can have supports added closer to the beginning of the school year.

If you wait until the new school year to request the assessment, the earliest it will be done is 60 days after the school year.
