The Miracle Project is a fully inclusive program that combines theater, film, music, movement, and other expressive arts to allow individuals with autism, other disabilities, and all abilities to “develop social and job skills, enhance communication, increase self-awareness, and confidence, ease anxiety, and find joy in experience.” Their mission is “to create a neurodiverse community where the voices, passions, and stories of individuals of all abilities are celebrated, elevated, supported, and belong.”

The Miracle Project is still ironing out their transition plan for in-person programs, so they will continue to be fully virtual at this time. They will likely be launching a hybrid in-person/online camp in preparation for in-person classes to start in the fall. They will continue to offer some classes virtually, as they have been able to serve many more individuals this way.

Dates: Check with them in mid-May for summer camp details and times!

  • I Can Do That: Professional Acting Training for Film & TV: Thursdays 3:30 p.m.–4:45 p.m. (April 8– June 10, 2021)
  • Social Skills (ages 5–8): Sundays 10:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m./12:30 p/m.–1:45 p.m.
  • Social Skills (ages 8–11): Sundays 2:30 p.m.–3:45 p.m.
  • Social Skills (ages 11-14): Tuesdays 3:30 p.m.–4:45 p.m.

Maja Watkins’ popular Zip Zap Zop improv classes have been a hit for our families. Zip Zap Zop Enrichment teaches social and emotional learning (SEL) using improv to enhance social skills. SEL includes social awareness, self-awareness, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and self-management. Maja shared that this summer, they are planning on holding classes in person in South Pasadena and are in the process of determining dates. They will offer both an in-person option and a Zoom option!

California School for the Blind’s staff has put together opportunities this June for students throughout the state to participate in that will encourage them to utilize technology, build social skills, and learn elements of the Expanded Core Curriculum in an online format. Courses include:

RAD Remote Program

Format: Online

RAD focuses on empowering children with disabilities, and their staff and volunteers are trained to support campers with disabilities. The environment is open, accepting, and recognizes that everyone has gifts. At RAD, campers develop life skills in fun and creative ways. Even though the program is virtual this year, socialization remains a centerpiece. Activities are planned in one-hour increments, and campers participate in different programs daily; this summer’s camp is space-themed. (Note: Some of the wording on their website may not be everyone’s cup of tea; however, we know several families whose kids have had a great experience with them.

Dates: June 28–July 3 (Monday through Friday); an activity box can be mailed or picked up at their office (17921 Sky Park Circle Suite G, Irvine, CA 92614) between 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 27th.

Age range: All ages

Hours: 9:00 a.m.–10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m.–1:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m.

Cost: $100 for new and returning campers; $10 for a family member

Camp Wildfolk creates a space for community and connection through activities and group projects. They are excited to be back in action this summer for a modified camp program at their long-time campus in West Hollywood (Larchmont Charter on Fairfax at Fountain); they’re also making their long-awaited Valley Village debut at the beautiful, spacious campus at Adat Ari El (on Burbank at Laurel Canyon).

Dates: West Hollywood: Weekly sessions June 14–July 23/Mini camp July 26–30, 2021 Valley Village: Weekly sessions June 21–August 6, 2021/Mini camp August 9–13, 2021

Age range: 4 years old–10th grade

Hours: 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.; extended day 8:00 a.m.–5:30 p.m.

Cost: Two-week sessions are $880; one-week mini camps are $440

COVID protocols:

  • They are following safety protocols outlined by the LA Public Health Dept., the CDC, and the American Camp Association (ACA).
  • They ran a safe program this winter and are eager to return back to camp to provide some much-needed space for social opportunities.
  • They are hopeful that staff and many families will be vaccinated by summer, though camp will still look and feel different. They have reduced capacity to ensure that campers can eat outside and be spaced out. They are also skipping field trips this summer and have adapted the program to be simpler and “back to basics.”
  • The camp is willing to allow a 1:1 aide if the aide is vaccinated. The approval is on a case-by-case basis. Call or email the camp to discuss your situation.

Camps for Education and STEM Learning

Galileo Camps

Children have traditional summer camp fun at Galileo Camps through playing games, participating in activities, and playing dress-up. The instructors are enthusiastic college graduates who support the campers with skills such as problem solving, willingness to try new things, and handling challenges. The camp has a different theme each week: National Parks Adventure, Olympic Games, and Toy Makers Workshop. Find your camp location!

Dates: June 21–July 30 (offered in one-week increments)

Age range: Pre–K through 8th grade (depends on camp selected)

Hours: 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. (extended care hours: 3:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m.)

Cost: First week: $384; second/third week: $334 per week (multi-week discount is $50); scholarships and discounts are available

  • Campers are placed in cohorts of 10 to 12 kids.
  • Physical distancing, daily health checks for campers and staff, frequent handwashing, and sanitizing surfaces will be implemented
  • 1:1 aides can accompany the child. There is a box to check on the registration form indicating the need for the aide (or you can call the camp).

Galileo Camps: Innovator’s Club

Format: Online

The Innovator’s Club gives kids hands-on, Galileo-style learning through weekly classes. Kids create new crafts, build, or invent every week, sparking their curiosity and imagination. Classes are small with a 1:12 teacher-to-student ratio.

Dates: Ongoing, Monday through Thursday

Age range: K–3rd grade

Time: Depends on the age group; classes are 75 minutes.

Cost: K–1st grade: $70 for a monthly subscription, $372 for a six-month subscription, or $600 for a 12-month subscription; 2nd–3rd grade: $80 for a monthly subscription, $432 for a six-month subscription, or $720 for a 12-month subscription.

Planet Bravo's Techno-Tainment Camp

Format: In-person and online

Planet Bravo is considered LA’s leader in K–8 technology education and offers an award-winning summer computer camp for kids. In-person locations include Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Manhattan Beach, Pasadena, Burbank, and Encino, and some courses are offered online.

They offer individual daytime classes for summer or four tracks with varying themes:

  • Gamer Track: Minecraft, YouTube gamer/vlogger, e-sports
  • Designer Track: Minecraft, Roblox, 3D animation, Adobe graphic design
  • Developer Track: Coding, game development, Java
  • Engineer Track: 3D modeling, robotics, LEGO robotics, 3D printing

Dates: June 28–August 2 (offered in one-week increments)

Age range: Students entering grades 2–9

Hours: Varies by course

Cost: Costs vary by course and registration dates; currently $299–$549 per week

Rolling Robots Summer Camp

Format: In-person and online

A group of aerospace engineers who love robots started Rolling Robots to give all kids the chance to discover their inner scientists. They have multiple locations and offer classes from beginner to advanced in robot making, in addition to other areas of interest such as Minecraft, coding, artificial intelligence, and 3D printing. Online classes are available. In-person classes are offered in Palos Verde, Glendale, and West L.A. No prior experience is necessary. Rolling Robots teaches children of all learning backgrounds the core concepts of STEM, robotics, and coding. (Average 14 students per in-person class.)

Each week, campers will have a different theme to choose from, including Junior Robot Coders, Scratch Coding Beginner, Minecraft Build and Design, LEGO Robot Build and Code, Minecraft MODs, and 3D Printing Design.

Dates: June 14–August 13 (offered in one-week increments

Age range: Online: ages 5–10; in-person: ages 5–15

Hours: Morning sessions are 9:00 a.m–12:00 p.m. Afternoon sessions are 1:00 p.m.– 4:00 p.m. Campers can enroll in morning or afternoon sessions or sign up for both sessions (with a lunch break from 12:00 p.m.–1:00 p.m.).

Cost: $225–$299, depending on the camp (class descriptions indicate what operating systems and software are needed).

Registration: To sign up for a class, visit their website, choose your location and click any “Open” link to view camp details. They will prompt you to login or register to add to cart.

COVID protocols:

  • Masks, hand sanitizer, and soap are provided.

Camps for the Arts

Format: In-person and online

The Artsy Wagon offers virtual art classes AND can bring their art classes to you! Virtual art classes, known as Artsy Creations, are ongoing, and you may sign up for a 4–6 day class pass and then join the classes of your choice. A recent theme was Cultures from Around the World. You may also purchase private or small group virtual classes in 4- or 6-week sessions, which are great if you want to get a group of peers together virtually to hold a special summer art session.

With their On the Go Art Classes, they bring the art class to you. You provide the space, and they will send the teacher and materials needed. Children will learn art techniques such as drawing, painting, watercolor, printing, and more.

They also offer a Mini-Camp Art Class, where siblings and peers can come together for an in-home art class! They offer options for two to four children to get together for art classes for a two- to three-hour art class; all the materials are provided, and activities include arts/crafts, movement, theater, and music!

Dates: Artsy Creations (via Zoom):

  • Mondays at 9:00 a.m. for 45 minutes (ages 3–5)
  • Mondays at 3:30 p.m. for 60 minutes (ages 4–8)
  • Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. for 45 minutes (ages 5–8)

Age range: Online: 3–8 years; in-person: 2.5 years–12 years

Paint Lab is an open-space art studio that offers classes to adults, teens, and kids throughout the week. In addition, they offer an “open lab” for people to come in and paint. They also sell supplies such as paints and canvases, and they hold art classes and camps. Their summer camp for kids will be a mixed-media art camp; parents can purchase supplies themselves or contact Paint Lab for purchasing.

Art classes: They currently have ongoing daily workshops and classes! Check out their daily virtual class schedule.

Art camp: Paint Lab is hosting an in-person summer camp at the studio. Each day has its own theme, such as animals and adventure, mixed media, drawing, and more.

Dates: June 6–September 6

Age range: 6+

Hours: Camp runs Monday through Friday, 11:00 a.m.– 3:00 p.m. for a full day; 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. or 1:00 p.m.–3:00 p.m. for a half day. Extended day is also an option.

Cost: $40 for a half day (11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. or 1:00 p.m.– 3:00 p.m.); $80 for a full day (11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m ); $180 for a half week (5 sessions) or $375 per week (10 sessions)

COVID protocols:

  • All lunches will be outside; classes will also be outside depending on class size.

  • The camp has had experience with 1:1 aides attending in the past; please contact them directly if you would like to discuss this as an option for your child.

The Realm Creative Academy centers on strength-based learning with practical application. Their website states that “basic skills such as reading, writing, and computation are taught through fascinating learning explorations rather than in isolation. Kids learn to make meaningful connections to their learning as they gain confidence in their ability to navigate the learning opportunities all around them.”

Their in-person summer camp offers different themed activities every week, such as Surf and Fun, Branches are Roots, Beach Balls, and more. Schedules change weekly as well. Half day and full day hours are available; see more details here. (Note: Although the website states there are online camp sessions, that is not the case for this year.)

Dates: June 16–August 18 (Monday through Friday, not every program meets every day)

Age range: 5–12

Hours: 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. (varies by program); extended hours are 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. (depending on the program)

Cost: $240–$650, depending on the program
