If your kiddo loves music, making art, dancing, or performing, these camps and classes are for them! Check them out here and watch the recording of our Facebook Live event, where we give you the lowdown on many of these awesome options! Be sure to also check out our lists of visual and performing arts camps and classessleepaway camps and family weekendssocial skills camps and classestherapeutic day camps, and education and STEM programs.

We've put together a guide for how to find the best camp for your child: questions to ask, funding options, and what camps legally have to provide.

And don’t forget that since Regional Center restored social and recreational funding, they can now help pay for summer programs (and support in accessing them). Our Public Benefits Specialist, Lisa Concoff Kronbeck, tells us, “Although funding was restored last summer for social recreation and camping, many regional centers are not adequately prepared to fulfill these funding requests, largely due to a lack of vendored providers. Every Regional Center should have a list of vendors on its website. If you know which program you want your child to attend and it’s not on the list, now is a good time to reach out and find out if they are willing to go through the vendorization process. Another option is to look at vendor lists for other nearby Regional Centers and see if anyone on their list is local to you.” You can read more in our article, Regional Center’s Social-Recreational Funding Is Back!

While we are here to help you navigate the system, save you time, bring you clarity and confidence, and connect you with the best available information and resources, please be aware that Undivided does not officially endorse or represent any of the resources, providers, services, schools, or clinics we reference or suggest. “Cali-Camp is held each summer in the heart of nature and rock-lined Topanga Canyon…a place to roam streams, meadows and oak trees.” Established in 1955, the summer camp welcomes everyone ages three to fifteen up to the Santa Monica Mountains. Camp activities include a wide variety of themes to select from, such as action/adventure, sports, creative arts, natural excursions, and specialty camps.

Cali-Camp believes in providing a camp experience for everyone so that campers will “see the cool in each other no matter the age or seemingly physical, personality, or developmental differences.” They take time to put kids together based on grade, age, and special needs. This is grounded in their goal to fulfill great summers for all kids, which “includes kids who have challenges physically, learning development rates, and emotional needs.” Cali-Camp has an Inclusion Coordinator to help coordinate. ACEing Autism

2001 S. Barrington Ave., Suite 320

Los Angeles, CA 90025

(310) 401-0544

info@aceingautism.org

Director of Program Operations: Justin Belisario, MD, (626) 297-3623

ACEing Autism was founded in the summer of 2008, by Richard Spurling and Dr. Shafali Jeste, as a family-run organization with the support of its volunteers and beneficiaries. Richard became aware that they could greatly enhance the lives of children with autism through tennis. He made a commitment to “dedicate his career to the development and expansion of ACEing Autism.”

The goal is to provide an hour break during which you can watch your child develop into a tennis player. Their clinics aim to “develop your child’s motor skills and hand-eye coordination, build confidence, and improve their general socialization, all within a FUN and controlled environment.” Program directors usually have either tennis or autism backgrounds, sometimes both. ACEing Autism is a group tennis program for participants with a 1:2 volunteers-to-participant ratio and a Program Director team that oversees the on-court and off-court organization.

AYSO VIP Soccer

AYSO REGION 7

8726 S. Sepulveda Blvd. Box D1211

Los Angeles, CA 90045

(424) 334-8338

Contact: Gregg at rcayso7@gmail.com, (310) 266-0806

The AYSO VIP Soccer program offers modified soccer. The goal of the AYSO VIP Program is to offer a quality soccer experience for individuals with physical or mental disabilities who otherwise may find it difficult to successfully participate on mainstream soccer teams. They define successful participation as the player’s enjoyment and the safety of all team members. The program provides VIP Buddies who assist during the games, in which players learn soccer while meeting new friends. It's open to everyone from age four to adults.

Note: AYSO offers the VIP program in various regions. We are highlighting the Westside, Region 7. If this is not your area, you may use their Region Locator to find a program near you.

Dates: Spring begins in March and Fall begins in August

  • Spring Program: Field in Playa Vista. This is designed for participants who have a higher level of independence, so if your child needs added support, please plan on sending a 1:1 aide or guide.
  • Fall Program: Nielson Field in Westchester. This session has participants with a wider range of needs, and there are buddies for support. It also fills up quicker with a larger group of thirty to forty students, so depending on volunteers and the number of registrants, they may close registration to new participants. Every team needs a certified coach, assistant coach, and referee. If they do not have a coach who has volunteered before the season begins, you will be put on a wait list.

    Location:

  • The VIP program for the West Los Angeles area is offered through Region 7 (Westchester, Playa Del Rey, Playa Vista, Marina Del Rey, Inglewood, and Lennox). In prior years, they have had a team in Santa Monica, Palisades, and Malibu, but one does not exist at this time. It varies depending on volunteer coaches and the number of registered participants.

Register: You may email Gregg directly for registration questions, and he will also be able to connect you with the coach. Participants can complete registration paperwork here.

Cost: Ranges from no cost to discounted rates. The average rates are $40-$50 for VIP programs compared to almost $200 for other programs. (Discounted rates vary by region.)

Little League Challenger Baseball

2550 Pacific Coast Hwy, Space 134

Torrance, CA 90505

CA District 25 Administrator: Marty Hoy, (310) 325-5764

Founded in 1989, the Little League Challenger Program is Little League’s adaptive baseball program for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges. Any individual with a physical or intellectual challenge may participate. If an individual can participate in the traditional Little League Baseball or Softball program with reasonable accommodations, they should do so. The Challenger program offers “buddies,” peer athletes who are in the Little League or Softball programs, to assist the athletes in areas of batting, base running, and defense as needed. The Little League Challenger Division accommodates players ages four to eighteen or up to age twenty-two if still enrolled in school. The Senior League Challenger Division accommodates players ages fifteen and above with no maximum age. They are still working to revive and organize the program after two years of COVID restrictions.

Note: The Challenger program is available in various regions. We are highlighting the Westside and Beverly Hills. To find a Challenger Division near your community, visit their League Finder or email them at challenger@LittleLeague.org.

Dates:

Register:

  • District 25: Registration
  • Beverly Hills: Registration (Just ignore the part that says you're supposed to be a Beverly Hills resident. That does not apply to buddy baseball.)

    Cost:

  • Each local Challenger Program sets its own policy with respect to registration fees, so it varies by region; however, most leagues do not charge a fee to participate. No player may be denied the opportunity to participate based on the inability to pay a registration fee. The Beverly Hills league, for instance, is offering free registration to any Challenger buddy baseball players.

    Special Olympics Southern California

1600 Forbes Way, Suite 200

Long Beach, CA 90810

(562) 502-1100

info@sosc.org

Manager, Sports & Programs: Tracy Belloso

Special Olympics “transform lives through the joy of sport, every day, everywhere.” It is “the world's largest sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities, with 4.4 million athletes in 170 countries and millions more volunteers and supporters.” They believe that through participation in sports, those with intellectual disabilities have an opportunity to find new strengths, abilities, skills, and success.

In a typical year, they offer twelve sports, both individual and team sports, including Athletics (Track and Field), Basketball, Bocce, Bowling, Flag Football, Floor Hockey, Golf, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, and Volleyball.

As of January 2022, activities include Athletics, Basketball (individual skills only), Bocce, Flag Football, and Swimming. At the moment, they have limited availability in their programs. Each team is only allowed to meet with fewer than ten people and only in certain sports. They anticipated in February/March to allow more athletes to join practices (fifty people or fewer) pending LA County and CDC COVID policies. For more information on their progress, you can visit Phased Return to Activity.

Dates:

  • They planned to welcome back athletes and coaches to a wider in-person activity program beginning January 2022.

    Location:

  • Multiple Southern California areas; links to each area are on Information for SOSC Athletes.
  • They have a program in the Westside/UCLA area. When not restricted by COVID, their Westside program offers Athletics (Track and Field), Basketball, Bocce, Swimming, Bowling, Soccer, Golf, and Softball.
  • Below are the sports they offer when not restricted by COVID. Not all of the programs offer the same sports.
  • Spring (February to June): Athletics, Basketball, Bocce, Flag Football, and Swimming
  • Summer (June to August): Bowling
  • Fall (August to November): Golf, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, and Volleyball
  • Winter (November to March): Floor Hockey

    Register:

  • Steps for registration and how to complete an application are on Information for SOSC Athletes.
  • The first step in becoming an athlete is an application that has to be filled out by the athlete, parent/guardian, and their doctor. Once they receive the application and it gets cleared in their system, Tracy Belloso sends the coach (depending on the sport) the athlete's information. The coach then contacts each athlete with their practice schedule. Each application is good for three years before it has to be renewed again.
  • If you would like to sign up now so that you can be ready when they are permitted to move forward, Tracy Belloso can send you the application. They will also have volunteer opportunities for any parents who might want to help out with a team.

Cost: Programs are free to the athletes and their families.
