Parent Question

What if the school refuses to assess my child?

Published: Nov. 25, 2024

A parent can request an assessment of their child at any time. If for some reason the school refuses to perform the assessment, your first step is to make a written request listing reasons why you feel the testing is necessary. Say that you're looking forward to receiving an assessment plan or PWN, so the school must respond to your request in writing.

In addition to sending the request to your school's principal, you can send it to a special education administrator too, like the SpEd director. If you are working with an education advocate or Undivided Navigator, you may want to CC them on the email so that the school knows you are working with someone to get issues addressed. This can sometimes be enough to help move a request along.
