What is Down syndrome?
Published: Aug. 4, 2023Updated: Aug. 9, 2023
Down syndrome is a genetic condition, although it is not usually inherited. Down syndrome is caused by the presence of an extra 21st chromosome. The additional copy of that chromosome is a natural phenomenon that occurs during the normal process of the duplication of cells. This can result in a variety of medical complications.
Like all people, individuals with Down syndrome develop uniquely, with both strengths and weaknesses. To learn more, see our article Down Syndrome 101.
