Math curriculum resources for teachers and IEP teams

Not all students learn at the same pace, and adaptive learning tools provide a way to tailor instruction to their individual needs. Programs like ones below are built to assess skill levels and adjust lessons accordingly. This personalization helps students to advance at their own pace, reinforcing the building blocks of skills while providing new information at the right time.

IXL Math: Recommended by an educational therapist, IXL Math helps students learn at their own pace with adaptive questions that automatically adjust to the right level of difficulty. A wide variety of questions keeps practice sessions fresh and enables all types of learners to reach their full potential. Parents can keep track of students’ progress, and learning can be adjusted easily depending on skill level. Choose from a bundle of all core subjects at a monthly or yearly subscription or choose specific subjects such as math. IXL’s curriculum also aligns with the Common Core Content Standards.

MobyMax: MobyMax's adaptive curriculum enables teachers to create individualized education plans for students at any level, allowing them to progress at their own pace. MobyMax uses personalized learning to identify learning gaps in all K–8 subjects and reports progress to the teacher. This personalized learning approach is implemented via online adaptive technology. Their curriculum includes a suite of classroom tools with features like diagnostic testing, progress monitoring, assessments, adaptive lessons, and student motivational and communication tools that encourage students to use the program from home. Subjects include adaptive math, adaptive science, adaptive social studies, language arts, early reading, reading, phonics, writing, and test prep/review.

TouchMath: TouchMath's multisensory program makes math engaging and accessible for students of all abilities who struggle to understand content at their grade level. They offer complete instructional programs, motivational computer programs, and classroom aides that allow the student to work at their own pace. Their catalog offers a variety of workbooks, programs, and resources based on individual needs and skill level. Items can be bought individually or in packages.

Shiller Learning: Shiller Learning offers “research-based curricula, music, manipulatives, flashcards, and workbooks” to help kids learn math skills. Their packages include Montessori-based lesson guides, diagnostic tests, parent guides, hands-on materials, and more. Math Kit I is geared toward grades Pre-K to 3 and Math Kit II is meant for grades 4 to 8; both offer virtual options and all their kits can be found here.

Dreambox- Math is a website that is designed to help with math intervention, remediation, or enrichment for grades K-9.

Explore Learning is a program for students grades K-12 that is approved by LAUSD and makes learning math more like a game.

Common Core State Standards math curriculum

Some states have additional resources to help students learn and practice math concepts. For example, in 2022, it was reported that only 33% of students in California scored at or above state standard for math. Since then, the state has concentrated on improving mathematics by compiling a list of programs for students with all types of abilities. The list of mathematics programs submitted by the California Department of Education includes teaching materials that are designed to be aligned with Common Core State Standards and to meet the diverse needs of students, including students with disabilities. Below is a short compilation of some of the programs for grades K-8.

Assistive technology for math accessibility

Assistive technology apps are designed for students with disabilities to provide access to math instruction.

Hands-on and tactile math tools

Manipulatives:

Tactile math boards/tools (for students who are blind or visually impaired):

STEM-based math kits:
